East Carolina University Language Academy (ECULA) offers you an academically-focused intensive English program with over 20 hours of instruction per week.  Not only will you gain the language skills necessary to succeed in your studies, you will also learn about American academic culture and expectations.

ECULA offers three levels of instruction:

• Foundation/Beginner
• High Beginner/Intermediate
• High Intermediate/Advanced

You’ll take a placement test shortly after your arrival at ECU.  This will help us place you in the best level for your abilities and needs.

Our program is skills-based, which means that you will take separate courses in the core skills of Reading, Writing, Grammar, and Speaking/Listening.  We also offer courses in Spelling/Vocabulary and in American Culture.  You will be in class every day except for Fridays during the Fall and Spring semesters.

In addition to your courses, ECULA students participate in the Conversation Partners Program that pairs volunteer domestic ECU students with ECULA students for weekly conversation practice.
