Scholar Eligibility
Basic Overview of Eligibility Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher at the time of application
- Specialists such as Dance, Music, and fine arts are eligible with an associate’s or certification.
- The program is suitable for the Visiting Scholar’s background, needs, and experience.
- The planned activity must be temporary, with an emphasis on research, observation, or consultation, and may include teaching responsibilities.
- NO contact with patients beyond incidental contact.
- Must possess sufficient proficiency in the English language.
- Acceptable proof of English proficiency:
- The Office of Global Affairs no longer accepts ECU mentor interviews as of January 1, 2025.
- Sufficient financial support is required for a J-1 Visiting Scholar. J-2 dependents who accompany the J-1 require additional funding. The minimum amounts required are:

- Health insurance coverage that meets the federal guidelines is mandatory for all J-1 Visiting Scholars and their J-2 dependents while they are in the U.S.
- The Visiting Scholar must have an ECU mentor for the duration of their stay.
Anticipated Pre-Arrival Timeline
The timeline for individual Visiting Scholars varies; however, the process should start at least three (3) months (90 days) before an intended start date. Countries vary in their timeline for visa interview appointments. Current wait times for Exchange Visitor visa interview appointments at individual U.S. embassies can be viewed on the U.S. Department of State website.
