International Student Employment


On-Campus Employment

On-campus employment is defined as employment which occurs on the ECU campus. Positions include teaching assistantships (TA), graduate assistantships (GA), and student hourly employment. Note: international students are NOT eligible for Federal work study jobs.

F-1 students are eligible to work on-campus a maximum of 20 hours per week when school is in session during the Fall and Spring academic semesters. During breaks and official vacation periods F-1 student are eligible to work more than 20 hours a week on campus. A student who has a valid I-20 and intends to enroll for next regular term may work on-campus incidents to status. No special work permit is needed.

J-1 students are similarly eligible to work on-campus a maximum of 20 hours per week as part of an Academic Training program.

Off Campus Employment

F-1 international students are eligible to work off campus as part of Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT) provided that the work is directly related to the student’s major and/or is an integral part of the degree program.

Similarly J-1 international students are eligible to work off campus as part of Academic Training provided that the employment is related to the students’ major field of study.
