Gillian
My name is Gillian Christman and I am a double major in Psychology and Sociology from Rolesville North Carolina. Other than a Global Ambassador I am also a part of the Honors College, a Resident Advisor, Secretary and treasurer of the Psychology honors society (psi chi), and doing my research honors thesis in the I/O psychology DISCO lab on campus.
Where did you study abroad?
Thessaloniki, Greece through an ISEP Direct program in the summer of 2024
What is Your Favorite Memory from Your Time Abroad?
There are so many core memory moments but the most impactful would be hiking Mt. Olympus on my 20th Birthday. I got to do it with my new friends and swim in the cold mountain springs. Seeing a sight of great importance in Greek mythology as a Percy Jackson fan was the best birthday present ever!
How Has Studying Abroad Helped Your Personal and Professional Life?
I am now confident in my ability to get around in a new city or town even when there is a language barrier. I also know that going on solo outings whether it’s eating out alone or traveling it doesn’t seem daunting to me anymore. Just my overall confidence has grown which means I can now highlight my self-efficacy, interpersonal skills, and adaptability to future employers through my study abroad experience.
What Advice Can You Offer to Students Interested in Studying Abroad?
Say Yes to as many things as possible. Not only could it be a personal growth moment but one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. Saying yes to trying new foods, going to a new place or even just on a walk around the town you’re in can make your experiences all the better.
Do You Have Any Plans or Ideas to Travel Abroad Again?
As I’m applying to Graduate programs to continue my education to masters and doctorate I’m keeping international schools in mind specifically for my masters. Though my friends and I have aspirations to budget travel South America.
