Bethany

Hi, I’m Bethany Martin, she/her. I am a student in the accelerated bachelor’s to master’s in Hispanic Studies program at ECU. I also have a minor in psychology. After graduation, I hope to earn my PHD and then become a Spanish professor. Winston-Salem, NC, is my hometown.

Where did you study abroad?

I studied in Buenos Aires, Argentina at La Universidad Católica de Argentina for a month in the summer.

What is Your Favorite Memory from Your Time Abroad?

My favorite memories from my time abroad consist of the adventures that we planned and went on by ourselves. While our program did include a number of tourist destinations, they could not include everything. On the weekends we took a boat to Uruguay, visited markets throughout the city, and went to la Recoleta Cemetery. I enjoyed exploring these places on our own without a guide directing us. It also allowed for us to bond with each other.

How Has Studying Abroad Helped Your Personal and Professional Life?

Studying abroad has made me feel much more empathetic to non-native English speakers in the United States. Until you experience this firsthand, it is incredibly difficult to recognize how terrifying it is to live in an environment that does not speak your native tongue. As far as professional growth, I was able to meet students and professors from all over the globe. I do not know how I would have made these invaluable connections, if I had not gone on this trip. This, is in addition to improving my knowledge of Spanish language and culture.

What Advice Can You Offer to Students Interested in Studying Abroad?

Take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad while you can! This is one of the very rare times in our lives where we can live outside of the U.S. for an extended period of time without fear of abandoning our responsibilities back home.

Do You Have Any Plans or Ideas to Travel Abroad Again?

I hope to take advantage of at least one more study abroad program while I am at ECU. Additionally, I hope to travel to more Spanish-speaking countries in the future.
