Travel Guidelines for Current J-1 Exchange Visitors
Traveling within the U.S.
Exchange Visitors do not require permission or documentation signed by the A/RO for domestic travel, nor a valid visa sticker to travel within the U.S. all J-1 and J-2 visitors need a valid:
- Passport, U.S. REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, or other government-issued photo ID.
- Form Ds-2019
- Travel signature not required
Traveling outside the U.S.
Contact the Office of Global Affairs International Student & Scholar Program Coordinator at least 10 days before your out-of-country travel. To travel out of the U.S. and re-enter, all J-1 and J-2 visitors need a valid:
- Passport;
- J-1 or J-2 visa stamp located in passport; and
- Confirm the number of re-entries listed on the visa sticker. M= Multiple, 1= One
- Expired visas allow you to depart the U.S., but visitors wishing to re-enter the U.S. must receive a new valid visa sticker to enter the U.S.
- Form DS-2019
- Up-to-date Travel Validation signature by the RO/ARO
- J-1 exchange visitors and J-2 dependents need a current travel signature from the Office of Global Affairs on their Form DS-2019 to re-enter the U.S.
- This must be signed before your out-of-country travels.
- A J-1 visa holder who will be out of the U.S. for an extended amount of time (30 days or more) will need to fill out an additional form.
