COIL Champions

COIL Champions are faculty leaders who have successfully implemented Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects into their courses and now mentor others in developing their own. They play a vital role in expanding ECU’s global and teaching community by sharing their expertise, offering guidance, and helping new instructors build confidence in integrating COIL modules into their courses.

What COIL Champions Do

  • Serve as peer mentors for faculty beginning their COIL journey.
  • Act as sounding boards and share constructive input and practical insights.
  • Lead or assist with workshops, and information sessions.
  • Promote COIL within their colleges and ECU more broadly.
  • Foster a supportive network of collaboration across departments and colleges.

The VE/COIL project enhances my courses since my students are not only learning from the textbook and lectures, but also from their actual engagement and collaboration with their international classmates.

COIL enhanced my course by giving students first-hand, eye-opening, and fun chances to communicate with international peers and explore diverse perspectives, practices, and values in early childhood care.

Through COIL, my students learn about teaching practices and educational theories from different perspectives, which helps them better understand the role of intercultural competence to effective teaching.

The COIL experience enriched my course by giving students a unique opportunity to learn with and from international peers. Through student-led class presentations —each shaped by the students’ own cultural contexts—participants were able to compare and contrast perspectives on a shared theme. In addition, collaborating across borders on a culminating project and showcase allowed students to build meaningful intercultural relationships while producing work that reflected their collective insights.
